Old Boys Football

9:48 am in Football by Peter Lusted

Following the addition of the history of the Football Club recently, it is worth visiting the link below to a recent article in the East Kent Gazette referring to the Club in the 50′s and 60′s.  Dick Day and Ashley Read have contributed their memories and refer to Brian Tyler, still a regular at the Annual Dinner, who was still performing in his forties when I first started playing for the Club whilst still at school in 1967.

Let’s hear from other former players with tales of skill, artistry and football magic!

A Police Odyssey – part 2

9:13 am in Down Memory Lane, Guest Posts by Dave Palmer

This continues Barry Gilbert’s story of life in the Police Force.  For the first part, see http://www.oldbordenians.co.uk/down-memory-lane/a-police-odyssey-january-1957-august-1992/.

While I was stationed at Kennington I decided that I needed some form of transport and purchased the cheapest form available – an NSU scooter. It set me free from public transport and I was able to trundle back to Sittingbourne  along the A2 when I had a weekend leave. The M2 had not been constructed then and so it was a long slog through the Medway Towns. In the summer I was playing cricket for Murston and in the winter continued to play hockey for the Old Boys.

Where are you now? [1962-69]

12:13 am in Down Memory Lane, Guest Posts by Dave Palmer

Old Boys move far and wide after leaving Borden.  Many keep in touch, others seem to disappear – did someone forget to let them out of detention?  Now is the chance to give your colleagues from the past a bit of an update.  How often have we asked ourselves “ I wonder what happened to old….”

To get the ball rolling Mike Pack and Peter Lusted have put together a brief summary of most of their colleagues obtained following two reunions since leaving Borden – one at 25 years and the other at 40 years.  Some details are more current than others.  A picture of the 25 year reunion is just above the details of the 1 East boys, with two pictures of the 40 year reunion at the end of the article.

Borden Grammar on Film

9:29 am in Guest Posts, Video by Ryan Jarrett

This is a guest post from Andrew “Bill” Bailey and is an OBA first – the use of video on the site!

I was at Borden between 1957 and 1964. I found some forgotten reels of 8mm cine film in the roof and was able to transcribe them into digital format. And hence, after only forty years, was able to edit them and produce three or four little films of fairly low quality but of possible interest to those who were at Borden in the early sixties.

The footage was produced on a clockwork Canon camera that an uncle had lent me. 8mm stock actually came as a 50ft reel of 16mm film which was run through the camera twice, exposing first one vertical stripe 8mm wide, 2 minutes running time. Then the film was turned over and given a second run through. Assuming that exposure settings were correct and no light had fallen on the part exposed film during the turnover or removal, one would cheerfully post the reel off for processing, accompanied by a postal order for about three weeks pocket money. These assumptions were usually unjustified and most films came back after a week or so with disappointing results. So then an editing process was required, duff chunks exised with a small guillotine, the remains spliced together with a transparent tape. Or, after one or two showings (using borrowed projector and screen), packed in a box and consigned to the roof.

Back to the 60s – ‘O’ level paper

10:00 pm in Down Memory Lane, School Memorabilia by Dave Palmer

A little more recent than previous papers, this is the British and European History ‘O’ level paper from 1962.  I’d be surprised if we receive any essays in the comments box to provide example answers to this paper, but feel free to email your suggested answers to the webmaster.  Don’t forget, though, that there is a two and a half hour time limit!
